Advocacy: Tell the Governor to Fund California's Apprenticeship Programs

Massive mutual aid responses in California have become increasingly common, as the risk from wildfire, flooding and other natural disasters grows more ominous. In order to mitigate these threats, our firefighters need to be able to work together effectively without jurisdictional restrictions. Submit a letter of support for standardized, apprenticeship training funding today.

Firefighter Agenda Remains Strong in 2017

In the closing hours before his deadline, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law several pieces of CPF-sponsored legislation that serve to protect an injured firefighter's disability retirement, develop a statewide firefighter pre-apprenticeship program and establish timely notification protocols for firefighters and EMS workers who are exposed to communicable diseases.

Governor Signs Legislation Boosting Wildfire Response and Mutual Aid

Legislation that will put more than $300 million into wildfire response and prevention, forest protection and local mutual aid won bipartisan approval in the Legislature and, now, a signature from Gov. Jerry Brown.

LODD: Retired Corona Fire Captain Randy Brunet

Corona Firefighters Local 3757 is saddened to announce the passing of one of their own in the line of duty. Corona Fire Captain Randy Brunet was diagnosed with job related cancer just two years after his retirement. He succumbed to this disease on January 28. He was 57 years old.

Brown Budget Boosts PERB Funding to Address Case Backlog

In a vote of confidence for public employee bargaining rights, the governor proposed an 8 percent hike in funding for the California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) as part of his new 2016-2017 state budget. Created in 1977, PERB is a quasi-judicial agency that oversees public-sector collective bargaining in California.

New Poll Shows Anti-Pension Measures Already in Trouble

Two proposed ballot measures attacking secure retirement for California's first responders are in trouble at the jump. A new statewide poll shows support for the measures proposed by ex-San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and San Diego talk-show host Carl DeMaio barely crack 40% support, well below the standard threshold for predicting ballot success.

Four Firefighters Injured in 50,000 Acre Valley Fire

The vicious Valley Fire in Lake County has exploded to more than 50,000 acres, destroyed hundreds of homes and left one person dead. Four CAL FIRE firefighters were airlifted to Sacramento over the weekend, suffering 2nd degree burns. All are expected to recover. At the same time, the Butte Fire in the Gold Country has topped 70,000 acres.

The United States Forest Service has announced the line of duty death of one of their own. USFS Firefighter Michael Hallenbeck, 21, from Shingle Springs, died late Saturday, August 8, 2015 after being struck by a tree during initial attack on the Sierra Fire near Lake Tahoe.

Rocky Fire Swells to 60,000 acres; 12,000 Evacuated

The Rocky Fire has exploded to 60,000 acres and is now threatening more than 6,300 structures across three Northern California counties. The fire, which has forced the evacuation of more than 12,000 residents, is 12 percent contained.

As of early Friday, 1,224 southern California fire personnel were on scene battling the 11,000 acre Lake Fire that's been ravaging the San Bernardino mountains. The blaze is now 10 percent contained.

Looking for Answers in San Diego Fire Outbreak

Normal operations resumed this morning at Camp Pendleton nearly a week after three separate wild land fires burned over 21,000 acres. Cooler temperatures have also helped contain the 2,000 acre Cocos Fire in San Marcos. Suspicion persists that the fires were intentionally started.

S.D. Fires Top 10,000 Acres - First Confirmed Fatality

A burst of heat-assisted wildfires continued to roar through portions of San Diego County, with total acreage burned topping 10,000. The largest blaze is at Camp Pendleton. A body was discovered in a transient camp, the first confirmed fatality.

Camp Pendleton #F-85 Firefighter Has Family Ties to Fallen Boston Firefighter

Camp Pendleton Professional Firefighters #F-85 member William Walsh grew up with his cousin, Edward Walsh, in the Boston suburb of Watertown. Edward Walsh, 43, died last week in as nine-alarm blaze along with fellow Boston Fire Fighters Local 718 member Michael Kennedy. The Walsh men come from a firefighting family.

Five-alarm San Francisco blaze injures two firefighters

Welding is being investigated as the cause of a five-alarm fire that started Tuesday night in San Francisco. Two San Francisco Fire Department firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the blaze at an apartment complex under construction in the city's Mission Bay neighborhood. Half of the city's on-duty firefighters were on the scene within an hour of the initial alarm sounding.

Three Major Fires Scorch Northern CA Wilderness

Fire crews continue to implement defensive strategies against fires from the Corral Complex near Willow Creek which continue to scorch vegetation with no containment. Defensive strategies were also key to battling two other, much bigger fires at the Salmon River Complex and Butler areas.

LA Times: Prescott Cheapskates Families of Fallen Heroes

In June, 19 firefighters from Prescott’s Granite Mountain Hotshot Crew were killed fighting a wildfire near Yarnell, Ariz. Six of the men were full-time city employees and their families are entitled to full-time survivors benefits. The other 13, though, were part-time. The city has a special category for those families: out of luck.

Silver Fire: Dramatic Video of Destructive Blaze

LA Coalition Addresses Public Pension Hysteria, Scare Tactics

Pension Costs to Decline in 2013-2014

New figures from CalPERS put the lie to claims that pensions are swallowing up more public dollars. According to CalPERS, the state of California will be paying $71.3 million less on pension costs in 2013-2014. Classified school employees will also see pension costs drop by $31.5 million.

Vandenberg FFs Get Fire Season Furlough Notices

NFPA: Home Fire Fatalities Average Seven Per Day in U.S.

The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA’s) new report on home fires from 2007-2011 shows that seven people died each day from U.S. home fires, and roughly one in every 320 households per year had a reported home fire during this five-year period. These fires caused an estimated average of 2,570 civilian deaths, 13,210 civilian injuries, and $7.2 billion in direct property damage per year.

San Jose Firefighter Back On Duty After Heart Attack

A San Jose firefighter went back on duty Monday after suffering a massive heart attack while fighting a fire last summer. Frank Ryan, a 17-year-veteran, collapsed and went into cardiac arrest at least three times on the way to the hospital. The care he received on the scene was critical to his survival.

SJ Fire Officials: Brownouts Hampered 4-Alarm Fire Response

A four-alarm fire in North San Jose wound up burning longer and causing more damage, thanks to city-imposed brownouts. According to San Jose fire officials, the loss of a browned-out second response engine caused a delay in setting up a water supply.

California Public Pension Funds Rebounded in 2010

 A new Census Bureau report indicates that California's retirement funds helped pace a national rebound in pension fund returns. According to the new report, state and local pension funds in California grew at a 12.4% rate in 2010, surpassing the national average of 10.6%.

Santa Rosa Charter Commission Votes to Keep Binding Arbitration

 A 21-member independent commission developing changes in Santa Rosa's city charter has voted overwhelmingly to preserve binding arbitration protection for firefighters and police. The commission refined the existing language, but ultimately decided that public safety officers deserve to have their contract disputes resolved through arbitration.

Court Strikes "Unlawful" Ballot Language in SJ Pension Measure

The effort by San Jose city officials to tilt the field in a June fight over pensions has been struck down by the courts. Declaring it "impermissibly partisan and misleading," a unanimous appeals court rewrote biased ballot language drafted by the city for its retirement security rollback measure.

PERB: SD Pension Measure Violates Collective Bargaining Law

 The state Public Employment Relations Board has ruled that the San Diego ballot measure to eliminate public pensions violates California's collective bargaining laws, and constitutes an unfair labor practice. The ruling clears the way for San Diego employees to file suit to remove the measure from the city's November ballot.

Governor's Pension Plans Target Current and Future Workers

 Governor Brown has released details of his plan to roll back the retirement security of current and future employees. The plan proposes to bypass collective bargaining by imposing a range of pension rollbacks and locking them into the state constitution. CPF and dozens of other organizations denounced the move as an assault on current and future workers.

Sacramento Area Firefighters Local 522 is remembering the legacy of one of its own, whose profound impact extended well beyond his profession and his community.

Retired Local 522 member Cliff Haskell, who died at home in Sacramento Feb. 11, was the driving force behind the creation of the Firefighters Burn Institute. The Institute – co-founded by Haskell and Local 522 – has raised millions of dollars regionally to build up the Sacramento area’s burn treatment response, help train burn unit staffing and support fire survivors.
